I did it! I finally started my own website and blog, I daydreamed about it for so long and kept waiting for the right timing. Inspired by both Lean In's "What would you do #ifuwerentafraid" campaign and the James Clear Writing Challenge, I decided to simply sign up and buy my own website melodyhmitchell.com. I forced my hand to begin, and here I am! Nothing has happened yet, so I start my first post with the thrill of anticipation.
Why do I write and why now?
Why not? I don’t know if the timing will ever be right, but I feel the need; I am always eager to share what I've learned and the books I've devoured with friends and random strangers willing to listen to me babble. Also, in my search for resources, I've realized the blogging community of military servicewomen is still small and it would be great to see it grow. I meet women in the military every day who are yearning for guidance, camaraderie, and support. My intent is to spark a positive discussion and contribute to a community - a tribe! - of men and women who want to help bridge the gender divide in the male-dominated fields of military and law enforcement. I hope to solicit questions, topics, and advice that would help women and increase understanding on both sides. I recognize I may not have all the answers, but I will speak from the heart and as the standard military response...“I do not know, but I will find out!” applies, I will do my best to bring in views from others. In fact, I plan to share broader experiences through interviews and other contributors (would you like to write a post?). This blog will work to empower women; however, there may be things mend find useful as well and I hope both genders can contribute to the discussion and gain insight. It will apply to anyone who is interested in promoting diversity, understanding, and success in the workplace and life.
But wait, there's more?
That issue will be a main aspect of this site; however, I also love sharing insights about all topics from leadership, books I love, and Middle Eastern culture too. There’s also so much more to life than work, I may share a few other delights. I hope this forum will help enable a creative outlet for me to articulate insights and loves. I am on a journey of self-growth; I relish the continual search for things to make life richer, more authentic, and more fulfilling. I hope to share some of the gems I've found most useful and interesting along my path. I also recognize this is such a new adventure for me, I know I will stumble along the way, and will likely be out of step time to time, but I'm going to keep marching post by post. I appreciate any guidance and feedback I get; though I do reserve the right to delete snarky and/or unprofessional comments, my intent is to maintain a positive, productive environment. I simply want to go for it and start writing, hopefully recording too...
I'm a fighter...and a writer?
In the past, I never thought I was able to write, I was always so last minute on papers; yet this last year, I realized I am capable of more than I ever previously demanded of myself and also learned I enjoy writing. Combined with the discovery of my passion for the empowerment of women, and topped off with the gauntlet thrown by Lean In and James Clear…I gained enough momentum to get me to reach way outside my comfort zone and start this endeavor. At a minimum, I'm committing to writing on "Wingwoman Wednesday." If at least one person finds something useful, or another female military member decides to start writing too, it will all be worth it. We will see where this adventure grows, how large this tribe will become. Welcome to my world...I appreciate you joining me on this journey...
